It's your vacation, don't lose any time! You can leave your luggage at the check room, change into your bathing suit (the bellman will have a room set aside to accommodate changing) and enjoy the beach, pool or a tall, cool tropical drink.
Credit
In order to establish credit with the hotel you will be requested to sign a credit card voucher or leave a cash deposit. You can then sign a tab at the pool, make long distance phone calls home, or charge hotel meals to your room bill -
At checkout, all charges on your room bill will be verified for your approval. The balance due can be put on your credit card or deducted from your cash deposit, whichever you established at check-in. You will receive copies of your bill. If not, ask for one.
Safety Deposit Boxes
In some hotels they are available free of charge. However, the key is your responsibility! The charge for a lost key is very high, as you have the only one - if you lose it, a locksmith has to drill open the safety deposit box!
Keep your tourist card, passport, traveler's checks, etc. in the box - hotels are not responsible for any valuables left in the rooms.
Telephone Service
International telephone calls are very expensive in Mexico due to taxes and surcharges placed on long distance international calls.
Check with the hotel operator before you call to verify what the charges will be, and to avoid any unpleasant suprises at check-out.
Collect calls generally are less expensive, but there may be a small charge for placing the call.
Servibar
Most hotels offer in room servibars (small refrigerator stocked with beer, soft drinks, liquor and snacks). Check the price list before helping yourself! Servibars are usually locked when you arrive. The bellman or the front desk will open it at your request. Restocking is done daily. The servibar is inventoried and locked the day before you depart. The charges will be on your room bill.
Beach Towels
Towels are available at the pool free of charge, just present your room key and sign for the towel. The towel must be returned by a specific time that afternoon. If not, you will be charged for it.
Tips
Tipping is according to the service you receive. It is suggested that a bellman receives $2.00 U.S. each time you require their service. A tip of $1.00 per night/per person is suggested for your chambermaid.
Beaches
All beaches in Mexico are owned by the Federal Government and are open to the public. Feel free to enjoy any of the beaches anywhere in Mexico.
Be careful of the currents and the undertow, as both are very strong on the eastern side of Cancun and Cozumel.
Departure
If you are not traveling as part of a group or tour, these steps will make your departure formalities easy and fast.
The night before your flight home, review your room bill with the hotel cashier in order to clarify all charges. In the rare event of an error, the hotel will have ample time to correct it, without the pressure of your plane leaving in an hour.
Once you have paid your bill, you will be given a "check-out slip" to present to the bellmen as you leave.
Have your luggage ready and request a bellman at least one hour before your scheduled pick up time - as many other people will be departing at the same time.
Your pick up time is the time your transportation is ready to leave to the airport. Don't miss it!!!
As you check in for your flight home, be ready to present your airline tickets, your tourist card, and your other traveling papers.
A departure tax must be paid as you receive your boarding pass for your flight. The payment must be in cash (pesos or dollars). Checks, credit cards, or travelers checks are not accepted.
