In the beginning...
Less than thirty years ago, Cancun was just a Mayan name, a deserted, sun-drenched island off the northeast tip of the Yucatan peninsula. Not long after the first hotels opened in the early 1970's, Cancun was well on its way to international resort stardom. The Riviera Maya was simply called the Corridor Turistico in those days…

Location is everything...
The Riviera Maya is located off the northeast point of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, directly south of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is within a few hours flying time of any location in the U.S: or Canada.

TIP: If you have the room in your luggage, pack some binoculars and a flashlight to take with you on your exploration adventures to the ruins. As they were constructed without electricity, your flashlight will give you the opportunity to extend your investigating somewhat. The binoculars will be great for checking out the "vistas" from atop those glorious monuments.
